COPUOS

Topic A: Accessibility and Underprivileged Countries' Access to Outer Space
Topic B: Space Traffic Control

Founded in 1945, the United Nations is an international organization that provides its Member States with a forum to cooperate on issues affecting global peace, security, development, and human rights.

The Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) was established in 1959 to promote international cooperation in the exploration and peaceful use of outer space. As humanity's reliance on space technology continues to grow, COPUOS plays an increasingly important role in addressing the legal, scientific, and political challenges that accompany the use of outer space.

COPUOS works to ensure that outer space remains accessible to all states and is used for peaceful purposes. Its work encompasses issues including space exploration, satellite technology, space debris, the long-term sustainability of space activities, and the development of international space law. The Committee also provides a forum for Member States to exchange information and negotiate approaches to emerging challenges in space.

As delegates, you will be expected to balance the interests of your assigned country with the broader goal of maintaining a peaceful, sustainable, and cooperative space environment. With space becoming increasingly important to communication, navigation, scientific research, national security, and economic development, the decisions made in this committee have implications far beyond Earth's atmosphere.

Note from the Director

Welcome to COPUOS!

My name is Cybil, and I am honoured to serve as your co-Director for the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS) at CSMUN III. I am currently a Grade 12 student at The Bishop Strachan School, and I have been involved in Model UN for 3 years.

The topics we will be discussing in COPUOS are especially exciting because space is no longer simply a frontier for exploration. As technology advances and more countries become involved in space activity, questions of cooperation, security, and access are becoming more and more important. I encourage you to approach each topic with an open mind, look beyond the information provided in the background guide, and consider both your country's interests and the broader implications of the solutions you propose.

I am looking forward to seeing the creativity, diplomacy, and thoughtful debate that each of you brings to committee. Most importantly, I hope COPUOS is an opportunity for you to challenge yourself, meet new people, and leave the conference with a greater appreciation for the complexities of international cooperation.

Best of luck, and I look forward to seeing you all in committee!

Sincerely,
Cybil Koudsi
