Ready Player One: Rebuilding OASIS

TOPIC: Reestablishing digital accessibility in a commercialised OASIS

The OASIS was once a digital utopia, an escape from reality, a virtual playground, and a platform where anyone could be anything. But in this alternate ending to Ready Player One, Wade Watts doesn’t win. IOI does. The corporation seizes control of OASIS, and Halliday’s dream is rewritten as a product to be sold. Now everything has changed. What was once free is now paywalled. What was once limitless is now monetized. Pop-up ads flood the screens of users, and digital consumerism is pushed to players at every corner, making a world once built with imagination turn into one filled with greed and profit-driven incentives. Now, logins are down, the user base is becoming angry, the stakes are rising, and Halliday’s dream continues to dwindle.
In response, the OASIS Oversight Committee has been formed, a high-stakes emergency summit consisting of IOI representatives and original members of the High Five. Their mission: restore OASIS to its former glory.

Delegates will focus on bringing in old and new users, determining virtual governance of OASIS, and the boundaries of paywalls/commercialisation. If OASIS was built to set people free from the confines of reality, the question is now: who controls that freedom?

Note from the Director

“People come to the OASIS for all the things they can do, but they stay for all the things they can be.” - Ready Player One

The world of Ready Player One offers more than just a virtual playground; it poses questions about freedom, identity, and control in the digital age. My name is Krista Anger, and I am honoured to serve as your chair for the committee of Ready Player One: Rebuilding OASIS. This is my third year in Model UN, and I currently serve as Director of Public Relations for STLMUN. I’m especially excited to delve into the unique landscape of Ready Player One, which is currently one of my favourite films. Exploring the story’s themes through debate and diplomacy offers a unique perspective on the future of digital spaces. I previously attended CSMUN as a delegate, and I am thrilled to return as a chair. I look forward to a dynamic and engaging debate with you all!

Sincerely,
Krista Anger
